How Natural Agarwood Is Harvested From Forest

How Natural Agarwood Is Harvested From Forest

This is one of the most frequently asked questions, especially as the captivating scent of agarwood evokes a world rich in heritage and deep-rooted Arab traditions. In our Arab culture, agarwood is one of the most essential elements used to perfume and scent homes, gatherings, and sacred spaces.

But how is natural agarwood actually harvested?

Agarwood goes through several stages before it reaches you in the form of incense sticks or pure oud oil, allowing you to enjoy its benefits—whether for perfuming or for a variety of other uses.

This aromatic treasure is extracted from trees known as agarwood trees, which grow only in specific regions of Southeast Asia, such as Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

The extraction process begins when specialists cut selected parts of the tree, which are then left to dry completely. Afterward, the material goes through various stages, including cutting and grinding, until it takes on the form we are familiar with today.

The Natural Agarwood Harvesting Process Includes the Following Stages

Identifying Trees That Contain Agarwood

Not all Aquilaria trees produce agarwood. To determine whether a tree contains agarwood, harvesters usually look for the following signs:

  • The tree is at least 15–20 years old.

  • There are lumps or swellings on the trunk.

  • The bark appears dark and cracked.

  • Burning a small piece of the wood releases a characteristic fragrant aroma of agarwood.

Agarwood Extraction

There are two main methods for extracting agarwood

  • Natural harvesting: This method relies on the tree’s natural formation of resin. Harvesters create incisions or wounds on the trunk to stimulate the tree’s defense mechanism, which produces resin. Over time, this resin hardens and forms agarwood.

  • Artificial induction: This method uses microbial or chemical inoculation to trigger resin production. While it allows for faster harvesting, the resulting agarwood typically has lower quality compared to naturally formed agarwood.

Processing the Agarwood

Once harvested, agarwood undergoes several processing steps to remove impurities and prepare it for production. These include:

  • Cutting and grading: The agarwood is cut into smaller pieces and graded based on quality.

  • Cleaning: The wood is soaked in water to remove dirt and debris.

  • Drying: The pieces are sun-dried or dried using machines.

Agarwood Product Manufacturing

Agarwood can be processed into various products such as:

  • Agarwood incense

  • Agarwood essential oil

  • Agarwood powder

  • Agarwood tea

  • Agarwood bracelets

Notes

  • Harvesting should be done responsibly and sustainably to protect this precious natural resource.

  • It is advisable to purchase agarwood from reputable sources to ensure its quality and value.

  • The value of agarwood depends on multiple factors, including quality, age, and origin.

  • Agarwood is used in various fields, including medicine, culture, and spirituality.

  • It is a meaningful and luxurious gift for family and friends.
